Wild Pony Races
Kids' competition adds thrills and spills to Pro Rodeo shows
Wild Pony Races are a great way to introduce kids to serious rodeo competition. The age range varies, but it’s generally for boys and girls aged 8 – 13, who compete in teams of three.
Before the chute opens, one member of the team is holding the rope close to the pony’s head; one acts as an anchor and holds the end of the rope. The one in the middle helps hold the rope but it’s his or her job to actually mount the pony and hold on through at least two jumps. The event is timed so the team members work together to control the pony and get the rider on as quickly as possible. There is a time limit of 20 seconds.
It sounds simple, but when that chute opens, the pony bolts and it takes every bit of strength the team members have to avoid just being dragged around the arena by this surprisingly strong animal.
Teams are sponsored and make their way around the rodeo circuit, earning points as they show off their speed and skill.
For safety’s sake, the team members wear CSA approved helmets and protective vests.
Specific nights for this exciting competition have not been announced. Call the Rodeo office for more information – 780-887-3235.
